Aniek de  Rooij

Music Producer, Educator, Sound Designer & Composer

Rotterdam-based Aniek de Rooij is an electronic artist working across club music, audiovisual performance, and sound for interdisciplinary contexts.

Under the alias Alberta Balsam, she releases experimental electronic music on labels such as Dekmantel and Clone, and performs live internationally in club and festival settings. Alongside this practice, she composes for theatre, games, and commercial media, moving between underground music culture and applied sound work. Balancing club-driven energy with speculative narratives and spatial, and conceptual approaches to sound.

In addition to her artistic output, she works with other artists through production sessions and coaching, focusing on sonic identity, clarity of intention, and artistic development. She is an active player in the local cultural field through educational work with Pulsar Sound Lab and as a council member of N8W8, contributing to Rotterdam’s nightlife and cultural infrastructure.

Shifting Forms is an interactive XR installation, exploring the impact of melting permafrost and its ancient, unknown organisms. Blending science and speculative fiction, it immerses visitors in an interactive world where they form a symbiosis with evolving physical, auditive and virtual environments.

We are currently in the prototype phase. Sound will be developed in two layers, using Metasound (implemented in Unreal Engine)  and 4D sound through Ableton Live to create an interactive, immersive experience.

Production by Klaas Tops

What does a journey to the centre of the Earth look and sound like? Next Nature Network invited us to explore this question, imagining the layers you would pass through as you descend from their headquarters in Eindhoven.

With insights from the PRELIFE consortium, we blended scientific knowledge and insight with speculation. Inspired by Jules Verne’s ‘Journey to the centre of the Earth’, the Geolift shows a modern interpretation of the wonders of the Earth.

The installation consists of a 360 degree panorama view, surround-sound installation and smell sequence. Giving it’s viewers a total immersive experience.

TRANSMIXR
Commissioned by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision
Composition: Aniek de Rooij & Yannick Verhoeven

The Space Archivists is a multiplayer game in social VR that allows players to explore the digital collection of museums in a futuristic sci-fi scenario. In this broken space archive, all sorts of items float through the air. It’s up to the players to fix the archive by putting all media-items back in place. The game was initially built with archival items from Sound & Vision’s collection, but becomes templateable through the Curator Studio. In the Curator Studio, curators from any museum can upload their own items so their visitors can explore digital collections with any themes.

‘Line-AV 2.0’ is an audio visual installation created by Macular. ‘Line-AV’ is a commissioned work by Klankvorm and made possible with the support of Creative Industries Fund, Mondriaan Fund, Fonds21, Stichting Bevordering van Volkskracht and the City of Rotterdam.
Line-AV 2.0 is an evolution of Daan Johan's original sound piece called 'Line'. The piece consists of 24 speakers and custom built LED fixtures. The result is an immersive field of sound and stroboscopic lights which reveal the characteristics of the rudimentary light and sound system.

For its premiere during Conflux Festival 2024 I was invited to create a new sound and light composition for the installation. This was presented as part of the exhibition in Katoenhuis and with a live performance on the installation at Plein 1940.

Sound: Aniek de Rooij

Garments: Elisa van Joolen & Anouk Beckers

Crack Nerve Boogie Swerve concentrates on the notions of breaking. Breaking norms, breaking free from constraints. The act and meaning of breaking was explored through the use of sound, the voice and  the body in an installation made of glass and concrete.

The sound was produced by using the glass as the primary source material of the composition, but also by using the glass itself as either a microphone or a speaker.
